Chiefs made the short journey down the M5 to Crediton last Saturday for their first away fixture in the 2018/19 Western Counties West league, writes Allyn Chetland. Tyler Hart replaced the injured Ash Harney on the wing and Rob Hooper made his debut for the 1st XV coming in for James Weeks in the centre. Both sides had made good starts to the season in their opening games; the R&Bs defeated Chard whilst Credition posted an impressive away win at Wadebridge Camels.
The R&Bs started the game impressively going on to dominate territory & possession throughout the 1st period, the hosts relying on their impressive defensive structure to keep The R&Bs at bay. In the final minutes of the half The R&Bs conceded a penalty just inside their half, this penalty was duly kicked to the corner for a 5m lineout. From the resulting lineout the Credition pack crashed over for a try in what was the hosts only real meaningful visit into the R&Bs half. Despite dominating the 1st half The R&Bs found themselves 5-0 down at the break.
The second half was a more even affair but it was The R&Bs who looked the most dangerous with ball in hand. A converted try half way through the half saw The R&Bs take the lead 5-7 but soon after a missed tackle by The R&Bs saw Credition score an unconverted to regain the lead. With time now running out and sensing that the next score would be vital Credition doubled their efforts and were awarded a penalty for a late tackle which was duly taken to increase their led to 13-7. However The R&Bs were not done, the last 5 minutes saw The R&Bs camped on Creditions line looking for the converted try that would bring them victory. After a series of scrums and attacking lineouts The R&Bs crossed for their 2nd try of the match – the touchline conversion attempt went agonizingly just wide of the posts ! Final score 13-12 to Credition.
A first loss in 12 months for The R&Bs but despite the result the team can take a lot of pride from this performance and a lot of confidence going into the next game.No.8 Cam Venn, Hooker Joe Dyke & 2nd row Chris Kitto, who unfortunately had to leave the field at half time due to a groin injury, impressed up front whilst Hooper & fellow centre Chris Batts had a solid games out behind.
Next week The R&Bs welcome Falmouth to The Athletic Ground – 3pm KO. It’s been numerous years since these two sides last met so this will be somewhat of an unknown quantity for The R&Bs. What is known is that so far in this league campaign Falmouth have played two and won two so this will another stern test for The R&Bs.
