Local thriller writer Chris Ewan was guest speaker at Wellington WI’s February meeting . Born and raised in Taunton, Chris has travelled the world researching his popular Good Thief Guides. The first of these, The Good Thief’s Guide to Amsterdam, won the prestigious Long Barn Books First Novel Award in 2007.
After eleven years of living on The Isle of Man, the setting for some of his later thrillers, he has recently returned to live in Somerset. Chris thrilled the WI members with tales of his travels and how he develops the ideas for his books. He also gave a short lesson in lock picking – there really is no end to the things one can learn at the WI!
During the business section of the meeting, Sarah Portch was welcomed as a new committee member and it was also announced that Wellington WI were hoping to become more involved with community events. A Community Action Coordinator has been appointed to facilitate this.
Future events were announced, including an 80’s themed Supper Club, a day trip to Bath and a weekend trip to North Devon where the cyclists in the group will tackle the Tarka Trail. During members’ time, a cutthroat and very competitive game of bingo took place and a good deal of cake was consumed.
The President, Karen Janas, closed the evening with a reminder that some membership renewals were now overdue. The next club meeting will be on Thursday 17th March from 7.00 – 10.00pm at The Beambridge Hotel. The speaker will be Katie Vennor from Tracebridge Sourdough, talking about fermented foods. New members welcome.
