The Red & Blacks made their longest journey of the season into Cornwall to take on Falmouth. Danny Lee returned after illness in what was otherwise an unchanged squad from the previous match against Wiveliscombe, writes Allyn Chetland.
Falmouth took an early lead via a penalty after The R&Bs infringed at a ruck. The lead was short lived when impressive winger, Ash Harney, magically emerged from a maul after a R&B attack was held up on Falmouth’s 5m for an unconverted try. This score was soon followed by a superb 50m unconverted try via winger Nev Pitman after great work by Liam Phillips. Falmouth responded with a converted try soon after following a period pressure on The R&Bs line to even the scores 10pts each.
This score was the catalyst for The R&Bs to double their efforts. Falmouth started to struggle to contain the now very confident R&Bs and soon gave away a penalty in front of their post which was calmly taking by Captian Paddy Jarman to regain the lead with 5minutes of the half remaining. The remaining minutes of the half saw The R&Bs pressing hard and these efforts were rewarded when No.8 Cam Venn crossed for an unconverted try from a well worked move off a lineout with Phillips again highly influential in the build up to make the half time score 10-18 to The R&Bs.
The R&Bs confidence continued into the second period, as a result they played some excellent rugby scoring some scintillating tries in the process with the hosts barely threating apart from the final minutes of the game. Soon after the restart Venn scored his 2nd try, which went unconverted, this was soon followed his 3rd try which was converted by Jarman.
Both of these tries were again after outstanding play by The R&Bs. Falmouth tried to respond but could not contain the visitors with The R&Bs dominating all aspects of the game. Winger Harney scored his 2nd try of the match, another outstanding try, which went unconverted to make the score 10-35. The last 10 minutes of the game saw The R&Bs reduced to 14 men following a technical infringement at a lineout with the hosts pressing hard on The R&Bs line. Despite being a man down the defence stood firm & The R&Bs scored a brilliant last minute 90m breakout unconverted try via George Hodgson after great work by his team mates with centre Vinny Gordon to the fore to make the final score 10-40 to The Red & Blacks.
Another good all round squad performance with each individual contributing hugely in this impressive away win despite a number of players feeling the effects of bugs & illnesses. Hat-trick hero Cam Venn continued in the same form from the previous match whilst Vinny Gordon & Ash Harney again impressed out in the backline.
Next week The R&Bs entertain Kingsbridge at The Athletic Ground – KO 2.30pm. Kingsbridge didn’t start their league campaign well but have picked up recently with some impressive wins of late so, as always, this will be difficult match to overcome for The R&Bs. The form that’s been present over the last two games will be required again if The R&Bs are to continue their winning ways.
Squad: Richards, Dyke, Marke, Walker R, Walker M, Kitto, Phillips, Venn, Goldstone, Jarman (c), Pitman, Gordon, Batts, Harney, Hodgson, Hart, Hancock, Lee.
