Kamyko Hair in the High Street, Wellington, will open its doors on Sunday 17 September in a very good cause. The owners are hosting their annual Hair4Love day to raise funds for children orphaned by Aids and HIV in the Sweetwaters community in South Africa.
This is a cause very close to Kamyko’s co-owners hearts as they are originally from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, before coming to the UK in 2005. The Sweetwaters community is near to Pietermaritzburg, Natal, a part of South Africa seriously affected by HIV/AIDS.
The Sweetwaters Community Project was founded by Zanele, an inspiring woman from Sweetwaters who felt she needed to dedicate not only her work and energy but also her home to children who were suffering in her community. It is now a safe haven for more than three dozen children who have been orphaned, abandoned or abused.
Funds raised from Kamyko’s Hair4Love day will go to the UK based charity Love Is All You Need which has been supporting orphans in Pietermaritzburg and Sweetwaters with clothing, access to education – and love – for nearly a decade. The charity has no paid staff and all the money it raises goes to the causes it supports.
David Struwig, Kamyko’s co-owner, underlined the importance of the charity when he said, “Without the donations and fundraising events like this the orphanage would not be able to continue it’s important work with the children whose lives have been irrevocably altered due to HIV/AIDS. In most first world countries this disease is not a death sentence anymore but in South Africa it still is as people cannot afford antiretrovirals, and are often shunned due to the stigma attached to the disease.
“It is a cause close to our hearts and we try make a small impact on the lives of these children.”
Hair4Love is at Kamyko on Sunday 17 September from 10am to 5pm.
