Final preparations are being made for Wellington Hospital League of Friends 50th Anniversary Fête on Saturday 23rd June in the grounds of Wellesley Park Primary School, Wellington.
It promises to be a fun-packed afternoon of family entertainment starting at 2pm with the official opening by Wellington Mayor Cllr Gary James and continuing to 6pm.
“This is an ambitious venture for the League,” explained League Trustee Diane Grabham. “The Fete is usually just 2 hours and indoors but having 4 hours and holding it outdoors has given us scope to include so many extra activities.
“We’ve had a wonderful response from people who want to be part of this – performing, running stalls or making donations of goods to sell. It’s really wonderful to see this support for our local hospital services and a celebration of 50 years of The League of Friends.”
The entertainment includes Wellington Majorettes, Avtar Bollywood and Bhangra Dance, Wellesley Park School Choir, Wellington Operatic Society singing songs from shows and vocalist John Walker. Diane expressed her gratitude to all the local musicians who had offered their support and she regretted that all of them could not be accommodated in the time available.
For children there will be a bouncy castle, an inflatable obstacle course and football coaching. Quieter activities will include crafting with Bodley Craft, face and nail painting and glitter tattoo. Wellington Bowling Club will bring along their portable rink for families to try the sport and there will be a few alpacas on site to enjoy.
Diane Grabham summarised the fête’s extensive programme:
“The wide range of stalls and games include the ever-popular plant stall (with many thanks to local plant nurseries who have once again been so generous in their donations). League members have also been raiding their own gardens to contribute plants. Staff from the Wellington Community Hospital and Stratfield House will be running the tombola, sweet game and a ‘Guess the Name of the Cuddly Dog’ competition. Wellington Inner Wheel will be running a stall and others include those selling children’s bracelets, bespoke bears, craft kits, preserves and strawberries. More are yet to be agreed.
“No fete would be complete without home-made cakes and who better to supply these than West Buckland WI. For hot food there’ll be a choice of freshly baked pizza from Stone Artizan Pizza or barbecue treats cooked by Coates Butchers, Rockwell Green. There will be a licensed bar run by The Vintage and tea or coffee from Braziers. Finally, there will be ice cream from Somerset Ices.
“Members of St John Ambulance will be in attendance and, call-outs permitting, Wellington Fire Brigade may bring along a fire engine.
“Tickets are already on sale for the Grand Draw available from Trustees, at the hospital Reception and at the Fete. First prize is £100 and there are lots of other prize packages including coach tickets to London, sports membership, family days out and more. Once again businesses both local and further afield have been incredibly generous. The draw will take place towards the end of the afternoon. There will also be a £20 cash prize for the owner of the programme bearing the lucky number.”
Money raised from this event will go into League funds to continue their support of local hospital services. Recent purchases have included a specialised exercise cycle for the physiotherapy department and pressure-relieving mattresses.
