Wellington Football Club retained their place at the top of Toolstation Division 1 Western with a 4-0 victory over 5th placed team Malmesbury Victoria at the North Street ground this weekend.
Wellington share top spot with Keynsham who won 0-1 away from home this week but Wellington have a game in hand.
A goal by Ian Bellinger after 30 minutes of the match and a second by striker Glen Wright before half term put the Tangerines into a strong position but Malmesbury kept up the pressure and were denied a goal before the break by a fine save from Wellington’s goalkeeper.
Substitute Jack Taylor scored two further goals in a second half in which the visiting team put significant pressure on the Tangerine’s defenders. Malmesbury’s aggressive response to the third goal drew yellow cards and resulted in one of their players being sent off. Players in the home team were also penalised but, ultimately, Wellington were rewarded for taking chances when they occurred and a fine performance from their keeper.
The team’s next league game is on 26 November against Welton Rovers at North Street.
