Paths in Wellington Park are becoming so potholed in places that Dave Mitton, vice-chair of the Friends of the Park, has appealed to the town council to bridge a funding shortfall to allow for re-surfacing.
“We’re told by Taunton Deane that they have a tender price of £56,000 for the repairs but they don’t have enough budget to pay for it. I’m asking the town council to consider making up the difference,” said Dave, a former Wellington mayor.
“The paths are in a terrible state and represent a real tripping hazard for the elderly or people unsteady on their feet. Someone out enjoying the park could fall and break a hip or worse.”
According to the Friends the park has had one of its best summer seasons ever, with the free Sunday concerts very well attended. However, vandalism is an ongoing problem.
“Within a short time of the hexagonal shelter being refurbished it had been damaged and the downpipes on the bandstand have been vandalised,” reported Dave.
