Parents and carers of children joining Reception classes in September now know if they have been given a place at their first, second or third choice school.
Two Wellington schools are over-subscribed. Beech Grove has offered places to 42 children but 88 applicants made it their first choice. St John’s C of E Primary School has 25 places available but has granted 27 places in Reception out of 52 applications which made it their first choice.
Rockwell Green Primary and Court Fields Schools are not over-subscribed and Wellesley Park’s figures are not available due to its academy status.
In Somerset as a whole 93.8% of applicants were granted a place at their first choice school, 3.6% were offered their second choice and 1% their third.
Nationally, figures suggest that the recent pressure on Reception classes has eased after a spike in the birthrate after 2008, with more families being given their first preference of primary school. At the same time, applications for secondary schools are rising.
Parents and carers who have not been offered places at their preferred choice can now appeal against the decision. Appeal applications can be made via the Somerset County Council website.
