This area’s Royal Air Force Air Cadets squadron, 41F (Taunton & District), is keen to find more cadets from the Wellington area and is holding a recruitment evening tonight.
The Air Cadets are actually part of the Royal Air Force and there are over 56,000 cadets attending over 1,000 squadrons nationwide, in fact there are more cadets than serving RAF personnel! Membership is open to boys and girls starting at the age 12 who are in year 8 at school, right up to age 18.
Parade nights are held at the squadron headquarters in Longrun Lane behind Castle School in Taunton, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7.00 until 9.30. There are optional activities most weekends too.
Cadets get the opportunity to take part in a wide range of aviation related activities such as visits to RAF stations, flying, gliding, shooting, sports and adventure training. 41F cadets recently trained and competed in the field gun race at the Armed Forces Day at Weston Super Mare and this summer many cadets took part in residential camps at RAF stations, both in the UK and in Gibraltar and Cyprus.
For the very first time this year, 41F Squadron will be on parade in Wellington on Remembrance Sunday, 11th November. They’ll be marching in support of the RAF section of Wellington School Combined Cadet Force to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.
