Sheppy’s at Bradford on Tone has won the Cider of the Year trophy at the nationwide Cider Awards 2018, beating short-listed ciders from Wales, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and South Africa in the final.
Exeter-based pizza and cider company The Stable launched the competition in April 2018 to find the best cider according to the vote registered by its customers.
It invited cider makers across the country and from further afield to enter their ciders in the first round. All entries were judged and shortlisted by cider experts from Crafty Nectar, Cider Box and The Stable. The eight shortlisted ciders went on sale in the 17 The Stable locations for six months in which customers could register their votes.
During the awards’ night at The Stable, Bournemouth on 26 October, the cider makers held tastings and final votes were cast with Sheppy’s 200 Special Edition crowned the winner. Master of cider David Sheppy collected the award.
Sheppy’s 200 Special Edition was created in 2016 to commemorate 200 years and six generations of craft cider-making in the Sheppy family.
It is the firm’s biggest growing draught cider, with keg sales increasing by 86 per cent year on year.
This year Sheppy’s has also won
- Best Craft Cider Producers in South West England in the third annual LUX Life Food and Drink Awards
- ‘Highly commended’ in the cider category of the Great British Food Awards 2018 for its Reserve Vintage Cider
- two stars at the Great Taste Awards 2018 for the 200 Special Edition and one for the Original Cloudy.
