Wellington’s Andrew Martin returned from the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships in Korea with a Gold Medal and as Mixed Doubles World Champion for the third time. Before leaving for Korea he had made this his priority having won Gold in the previous two World Championships in 2013 and 2015.
He was partnered by fellow Brit Rachel Choong who came away from the Dongchun Gymnasium in Ulsan, Korea, with three Gold Medals – in the Women’s Singles and Doubles as well as the Mixed Doubles.
Andrew’s hopes of a further medal in the Men’s Doubles were dashed when he and his partner, Miles Krajewski (USA), lost both their Group matches. He was seeded 5th in the Men’s Singles event which was dominated by two fellow British players, Jack Shepherd and Krysten Coombs.
Para-Badminton makes its debut in the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020 and Andrew is now raising funds for a Paralympic challenge through his ‘GoFundMe’ page and a collection point in Odette’s Tea Room in the High Street, Wellington.
