Tim Potter wants to expand his very successful butchers into the empty shop next door. “I’d love to move in there. We’re very busy almost all the time and we need more space for staff and customers,” said Tim, who has just won more national awards for his sausages and pasties.
Powell’s Workwear at 19a Fore St closed last month after the owner decided to move the business online and Tim has been in discussion with the owner of the building about expanding into the empty premises.
“We’re both happy to do it but it doesn’t look as if the planners are keen on the idea. It’s very, very frustrating,” said Tim. “They want to allow a small connecting doorway but we need to open up the two shops into a much bigger space. They don’t seem to want us to move forward.”
Ironically, the planning documents show that in the past century the two premises were once joined into a single shop. However, as Powell’s is a Grade II listed building in the town’s Conservation Area the rules on changes to the structure are very tight.
