The first of the summer’s Wacky Wednesdays took place at Longforth Farm Children’s Play Area on Wednesday 2nd August with the children’s delightful fancy dress costumes defying the rain and low cloud. Helpers from a number of different community groups were on hand to supervise games and activities and provide refreshments.
Organiser Shona Stone, Community Empowerment Officer for from Knightstone Housing, said, “This event forms part of the Wacky Wednesday programme which we’re holding over the summer in different locations across Wellington. Wellington One Team are one of the partners along with Knightstone, Better (formally Tone Leisure), Getset, Somerset Skills & Learning, TDBC and Churches Together as well as other agencies who take part in one or more of the events.
“Each agency donates time and resources to put these events on. We charge £1 entry per child and everything they do once they’ve registered is free. These are low-cost activities held in locations across Wellington so that as many members of the local community can access them as possible. They are non-profit-making with money being reinvested in future events.”
Two more Wacky Wednesdays are programmed for August: ‘Waddle ‘n’ Walk’ will take place on Wednesday 23 August at Oaken Ground Play Area with lots of quacking activities planned and there’s a ‘Beach and Pool Party’ on Wednesday 30 August in Wellington Park which promises to be wet and wonderful. With fine weather Wacky Wednesdays have been known to attract more than 200 children and are guaranteed fun for parents and carers too.
