Winners of St John’s C of E Primary School’s half-term Reading Challenge chose their prize books from W H Smiths in Wellington this week.
Linda Roberts, St John’s Literacy Subject Leader, said, “We put a great emphasis here on encouraging all children to read for pleasure. It was a wonderful opportunity for children from each year at the school to visit the shop and choose their own books from the shelf.”
Local poet Annie Fisher recently visited St John’s as part of Poetry Week. Following workshops with Annie, pupils in each year explored a range of different poetic techniques and wrote poems of their own.
The main focus of Poetry Week was poems by the Cornishman Charles Causley as this is the 100th anniversary of his birth. Pupils from EYFS up to Year 6 learnt a variety of different poems by Causley throughout the week.
