Would-be engineers from Wellington School won a competition at the Flybe Training Academy at Exeter Airport last week. Future Engineers was organised jointly by the University of Exeter, Flybe, The Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm Museum.
Ten boys and girls from Year 9 visited the Flybe Academy as part of an event designed to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.
The winning team were presented with a cup and a model Flybe plane after their prototype landing gear, engineered entirely from rolled up A4 paper, withstood 3kg more load than the other competitors’ structures.
After a trip round a Royal Navy Lynx Helicopter the group moved on to further exciting activities at the University of Exeter Engineering Department; examining manufacturing process with the use of Lego and, to cap the day, the chance to experience a flight simulator.
