Wellington Business Association is concerned that the number of empty shops in the town centre is the highest for three years.
In the past 12 months Cloud9, the Co-op Bank, Shaun Richards electrical, Lucy Foreman hair, and Country Sports have all closed their doors. So to has the King’s Arms pub.
“It’s a little worrying because retail is a town’s public face. People like to go out and browse,” said Andrew Sully, the WBA’s economics development spokesman.
“If they go out into a town with too many empty shops then they might decide to go to Taunton next time. The odd thing about this is that the employment market in Wellington seems buoyant with local companies having to work hard to recruit new staff.”
You need to ask the question ” Why are they all closing down their businesses?”
Surely there must be a common denominator.
I for one believe it is the high rates they can not afford, plus the extreme difficulty of street parking.
As Elaine says it’s the high cost of rates for their businesses and car park charges that drive people away.
The Car park off north street is in an awful state too, so what do they do with that easy income.
Improve the car parks and make it free parking for 2hrs.
