Mowers start where they left off in men’s skittles

Reigning Chris Bullock champions, Mowers (pictured), have maintained their winning start to the season in Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League.

Here’s the full round-up of matches on Thursday and Friday, together with this week’s fixtures and the early league tables.

CHRIS BULLOCK CHAMPIONSHIP

Here 4 the Beer 340 v Mowers 368

Mowers beat early pacesetters Here 4 the Beer by 28 pins at the Rockwell Green Institute to take up their familiar place at the top of the division. Will Brewer top scored with 48 for the home side while Vince Milton hit an impressive 56 for Mowers to help his side to victory.

Home Guard IV 355 v Foresters 352

Home Guard IV picked up their first points of the season when they inflicted Foresters’ second successive league defeat after they pipped them by just three pins on the upstairs alley at the Conservative club. Home Guard IV Skipper Sam Berg shared top score of 50 with Dan Peters while Greg Brewer also hit 50 for the visitors.

Nynehead Club 292 v King Pins 322

Nynehead Club lost their first game of the season as they went down to King Pins by 30 pins on their own alley. This was the Pins’ first win of the season, and they were helped on their way by top scorer Jordan Bryant who hit 44 on a tricky alley. Jim Compton and Kev Cullen were top scorers for the Nynehead Club side with 40 pins apiece.

Odds and Ends 367 v Scuppas 384           

Last season’s CB Championship runners-up Scuppas won their opening match of the season on the downstairs alley at the Victoria Arms as they defeated Odds and Ends by 17 pins to leave thome side winless so far this season. Dave Squire top scored for Scuppas with 51, while top man for Odds and Ends was Rob Stanyard with 55.

Outsiders 347 v All Stars 344

Outsiders opened their account for the season when they narrowly defeated All Stars by three pins in a low-scoring match on the downstairs alley of the Conservative Club. Veteran Gerry Larcombe was the star man for the home side, top scoring with 53. Andy Chappell led the All Stars challenge with a respectable 52.

United Services 392 v WRFC 406

The rugby boys’ impressive start to the season continued as they beat United Services by 14 pins at the White Horse. United Services remain without a win so far – a record they share with stablemates Foresters and Odds and Ends. Steve Rea with 66 was Rugby Club’s top scorer and it  was also the highest away score of the week. Geoff Smith with 55 was top scorer for the home team.

GERALD THORNE CHAMPIONSHIP

Bell Green 368 v Reservists 367

Bell Green’s impressive start to the season continued with victory over defending champions Reservists by a single pin on the upstairs alley of the Victoria Arms. Jason Powell hit a fine 60 to help see his team home, Phil Powell and skipper Darren Sparks shared top spot with 52 each for the visitors but their side they fell agonisingly short.   

Holywell Lake 393 v Relyon 364

Holywell Lake bounced backed with a 29-pin win on the downstairs alley of the Victoria Arms after their opening day defeat. Skipper Steve Dowson set the example for the Lakers with a fine 55 while Geoff Mould hit an impressive 60 for the visitors, who still fell well short in their chase.

Home Guard 2 330 v Oaks 308            

Home Guard 2 got their season up and running with a 22-pin over Oaks at the Football Club. In a low-scoring match on the challenging alley, both teams found spare chances hard to come by. Macca Campbell hit the top score for Home Guard II with a hardworking 46, while Tristan Gerrard went three better for the visitors as he hit 49.

Hot Shots 340 v OBA 322

Hot Shots share top spot in the division after their second consecutive win. They defeated OBA by 18 pins on the downstairs alley of the Conservative Club. Alan Brooks led the way for the home team with 48 while Rob Billett hit a fine 50 in vain for the visitors.        

Queens Legs 361 v Fireguard A 367

Queens Legs lost for the second successive week as the slipped to a sixpin home defeat to Fireguard A on the upstairs alley of the Conservative Club The visitors had Adrian Ridgeway in good form as he hit 52 to lead the way. Stu Sutton battled hard with 49 to take top spot for the home side but it was not to be their night.        

Rebels 365 v Cottage Pies 388           

Cottage Pies came out on top when they defeated stablemates Rebels by 23 pins at the Cottage. Sam Vile with an impressive 65 was the leading player for the Pies while John Sellick hit a good 55 for Rebels. Cottage Pies are one of three teams sharing top spot in the division.

Report Centre A 342 v Shooters 407

Shooters are another level at the top and they showed why as they hit the highest away team score of 407 at the White Horse against Report Centre A. Geoff Ash top scored for the home team with a commendable 52 but he was outshone by the visitors’ Adrian Maidment who hit a fine 65 to help his team home.
