Two volunteers from the Children’s Hospice South West shop in Wellington’s High Street attended a special Royal event – and you can watch it on ITV this evening (Wednesday)
Daniel Aspin and Sheila Powell were nominated and then invited to attend the Together at Christmas carol service in Westminster Abbey, hosted by HRH the Princess of Wales.
The event welcomed 1,600 guests, including volunteers from charities nationwide, local heroes, and familiar faces from the world of entertainment.
A spokesperson for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) said: “Daniel has been part of CHSW since the Wellington shop first opened in January, 2011.
“Twice a week, he takes his place behind the till from 10am to 3pm, greeting customers with his warm smile and friendly manner.
“Known for his exceptional customer service, Dan is loved by the local community and brings joy to everyone he meets.
“Always happy to help wherever needed, his enthusiasm and commitment have made him a cornerstone of the Wellington shop team.
“Sheila joined the shop at the same time as Daniel and also volunteers twice a week.
“She’s a powerhouse behind the scenes, processing stock at incredible speed—steaming, hanging, and tagging clothes so items can be rotated quickly and efficiently.
“Thanks to Sheila’s hard work, the shop always looks fresh and inviting.
“Thoughtful and caring, she’s the kind of person who always looks out for her fellow volunteers, creating a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Her dedication makes her an essential part of the team.”
Julie Johnston, Area Retail Manager for CHSW, added: “Daniel and Sheila were put forward for many reasons, including their length of service and the warm welcome they always give to our customers.
“They create a happy, vibrant atmosphere every time they volunteer.”
The service featured a mix of traditional carols, music, and poems from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor – and a Bible reading from the pulpit by Prince William.
Together at Christmas is being shown on ITV1 this evening at 7.25pm.

A well deserved honour to them both for working in a Children’s Hospice South West shop. Well done and great picture.
I also volunteered at the CHSW for a number of years under Juelz and subsequently Helen, both outstanding managers. The shops were well stocked, very elegant with sensibly priced items. Both Daniel and Sheila deserve every accolade made to them. Their commitment to the shop is awe inspiring and Sheila has become a friend who generously hosts me when I occasionally return to Wellington. I miss the shop and the staff very much. I’m so happy they received this honour, well deserved. xxxx
