Chiefs’ brave battle against league leaders

Tribute South West Regional Two: Weston-super-Mare 62pts, Wellington Chiefs nil

The Chiefs went down fighting in their toughest game on the season, away to the runaway league leaders today (Saturday).

Still searching for their first victory of the season, they faced a Weston side looking to make it 16 wins out of 16.

Wellington’s task was made even harder before kick-off, with travel issues meaning they started the match with only 14 players. Despite that setback, the visitors showed excellent endeavour from the outset, but Weston opened the scoring after eight minutes to lead 5pts-nil

The home side struck again soon after, adding a converted try following an interception, coming against the run of play after some positive Chiefs phases involving the returning Tom Slade.

Weston then began to exert sustained pressure and extended their lead to 19pts-nil.

To their credit, Wellington continued to front up physically but further tries saw the hosts pull clear, reaching half-time with a 34pts-nil advantage.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Weston maintaining their relentless tempo to add scores at regular intervals as the Chiefs defended bravely under constant pressure.

Despite the final comprehensive scoreline, Wellington can take heart from a very good rearguard performance against the league’s dominant side, showing spirit, commitment and resilience throughout in extremely challenging circumstances.
