Local cricket season gets under way

The new season for Wellington CC officially gets into full swing tomorrow (Saturday).

The 1st XI are away to Ilminster in the WEPL Somerset Division, the seconds are at home to Wedmore in Somerset League Division One match and the third string are away to Wembdon 5th XI in Division Seven South at Cannington College.

After eight successful seasons as 1st XI captain, Arron Campbell has stepped down and has been replaced by Jacob Hurry who steps up from vice-captain with Toby Stirzaker taking on that role.

The 2nd XI, after a third successive promotion in the Somerset League, retain Rob Moysey as captain. Paul Short has stepped down as vice-captain with Alex Derbidge taking over.

The 3rd XI also see a change in their leadership as Tyler Fyfe takes over as captain from Connor Wickenden and Tony Hutchings becomes his deputy in place of Des Campbell.

It’s a busy weekend across the club as, on Sunday, the 1st XI make a quick return to Ilminster to take on both the host club and Taunton in a new WEPL based T20 competition for Tier Three sides, the Four Regions Cup.

That same day sees Isla Hendy’s women’s and girls’ section start their Somerset Cricket Foundation Softball League season.

Junior section matches also commence in the Taunton and District Youth League on Sunday – for the U11s, under the management of Natalie Anderson, and the U15s under the guidance of Jim Weir.
