Visitors can enjoy a free guided tour of our iconic Monument today (Wednesday) as part of this month’s Heritage Open Days.
The National Trust landmark reopened to the public in 2022, for the first time in 20 years, following a £3.1m restoration project, funded through donations from individuals and organisations.
“We’re excited to welcome visitors to the Monument” said Jess Midgley, Senior Community and Participation Manager. “Tours will take place in 30-minute slots between 10am and 4pm and there’s no need to book in advance.
“Wellington Monument is a much-loved historic feature in the landscape, and we expect this event to be very popular. As this is a drop-in event, visitors may need to wait for a tour slot to become available.”
During the tours, volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions about the Monument before visitors embark on the climb up its 232-step spiral staircase.
“The historic staircase is very narrow, with only three people able to ascend at a time,” added Jess. “But once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Devon and Somerset countryside.
“We are very lucky to have a passionate and knowledgeable group of volunteers who help us to provide regular tours of the Monument, every Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“So, if you can’t join us tomorrow, tours are running until September 28th and are bookable on the National Trust website at £5 per visitor.
“Your donations help us stay on top of ongoing maintenance and repairs, ensuring this special landmark can be enjoyed by future generations.”
Nic Monteiro, one of the volunteers at the Monument said, “I volunteer as I love being able to give something to my community.
“My family thoroughly enjoy visiting the site and the children love playing on the cannon.”
During fundraising for its restoration, members of the public were invited to write letters recalling special moments at the three-sided obelisk.
These letters were then sealed within the Monument, where they remain today.
“The Monument holds a special place in the hearts of people across the community,” said Simon Larkins, General Manager for Somerset Coast and Countryside.
“We hope visitors coming along for Heritage Open Days will enjoy not only the spectacular views, but also learning about the hard work that goes into keeping history alive in unique places like Wellington Monument.
