Dotty Dolly, the quilters’ paradise in Fore Street, has raised an impressive £1,780 for the MacMillan Cancer Support charity – an amount which surprised the shop’s co-owners, Debby Standfast and Joan Herrington.
The initial idea of trying to raise money for the charity by raffling a quilt was the outcome of personal experience. Debbie said, “My Mum was supported by MacMillan nurses when she had cancer and it was amazing how many of our customers at Dotty Dolly had also been helped in the same way.”
Debbie’s idea was to make a quilt to raffle in the shop last September but Joan thought they would make more from a sale. “With the help of customers and friends we organised a fabric sale just before Christmas with coffee and cakes at West Buckland Village Hall,” Debby explained. “We put together scrap packs, sold spare fabric from our sewing room, friends donated some of their fabric – and we raised far more than either of us expected.” She added, “We would like to thank everyone who supported us and this excellent charity.”
