Youth theatre group, Genesis, looks on course to change the way we see history this week. ‘The Herstory of the World’ is a feminist Dr Dee’s reworking of events beginning with Adam and Eve – or Eve and Adam – in the Garden of Eden and delivers a totally fresh interpretation of virtually everything since then. And it is very funny! You won’t have seen ‘Juliet and Romeo’ in this way – ever – before!
The show was written by Bob Higgins, former Head of Drama at Uffculme School, originally for his pupils there, and he directs this production at the Wellington Arts Centre. His cast of young people, all of them under 16, has been rehearsing since January, preparing for this performance alongside rehearsals for the recent production of ‘Oliver’ at the Wellesley Theatre. Genesis is exclusively for young people so this time they have the stage to themselves – and there are lots of stars in the making here. Technical support and costumes are also to the same high standard.
Audiences will find lots to enjoy about ‘Herstory’: it is genuinely witty, confidently and energetically performed by a company of able young actors – who also sing and dance – and is fine entertainment. The company deserves good audiences for their commitment and talent. And from the evidence of the impressive skills of the young people in this group, Wellington Arts Association is providing valuable training and experience for the next generation of senior performers in the town.
