Transition Town Wellington’s programme of events this week includes two with a wild focus and one which relates to the local community.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) – those interested in the topical issues of rewilding and conservation can join a talk at St George’s Catholic School, The Mount, Taunton TA1 3NR from from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
The talk, hosted by Somerset Wildlife Trust, addresses this question: “If beavers are being reintroduced to Somerset, should wolves be next?”
Rewilding is a relatively new concept that has come to the forefront in recent years. Stephen Parker of Natural England explains the rationale of rewilding and its contribution to the wider picture of nature conservation in the UK.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) – there’s a free online event available entitled Working with nature along the Culm from 4.30pm to 6pm.
For the last two years ‘nature-based solutions’ (NBS) have been going in the ground and river channel along the Culm and its tributaries as part of the Connecting the Culm project.
But what are these nature-based solutions? Why do we need them? And where are they?
These questions will be answered at this online event by guest speakers who are:
- Jo Neville (National Trust) – brief introduction to what NBS are and why we need them, including an overview of NBS at National Trust Killerton.
- Corrie Grafton & Zoe Smith (Westcountry Rivers Trust) – nature-based solutions along the wider Culm, what they look like and aim to achieve for the catchment’s future.
These presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.

TTW’s Community Gardening projects continue on Thursday at Burrough Way from 10am.
This session will focus on scything. All equipment is provided but do wear thin gardening gloves if you have them. Everyone is welcome, no need to book and no prior experience needed. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. For directions use this link http://ttw.org.uk/directions
Community Gardening is at Fox’s Field on Saturday at 10am.
Activity will be decided nearer the time, either spreading cardboard and compost mulch or weeding around the plants in the rest of the forest garden. Everyone is welcome, no need to book and no prior experience needed. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Generally speaking, it’s always useful to wear suitable shoes- wellies or walking boots are great, and to wear gardening gloves. Please bring a shovel, shears, trowel or wheelbarrow if you can. Please try to either walk or cycle, and if you have to drive, please park a bit further away to avoid complaints from nearby residents.
