The man accused of setting fire to Waitrose remains in prison. Robert Pitman, 24, was reminded in custody at Taunton Crown court until October 17.
Mr Recorder Harris QC expressed some disquiet that CCTV of the incident had still not been made available and gave the police officers involved a deadline of seven days to produce it to the defence and prosecution lawyers.
Waitrose re-opened last Thursday, less than four weeks after the fire that caused an estimated £1m worth of damage to the supermarket.
What a senseless thing to do. Am I alone in thinking that, if proven to be guilty, this Pitman chap should be put in stocks outside the store entrance when it re-opens? Waitrose has proved to be an essential asset to our great town, and without it for three months other businesses will undoubtedly suffer. Bring back the stocks! There will be many folk queing up to throw tomatoes at him ike in the old days. Name and shame!
It is sad that this character type intimidates …. is allowed to intimidate, the public without consequence! What has happened to society? Apparently – we pay our bills, taxes and dues necessary but God forbid you approach these characters when wronged ….. you are threatened and wait in fear for repercussions. We need stand together and name, shame, boycott and refuse all services / sales to persons showing no respect and who cause devastation to innocents? It is WRONG for this action to be brushed under the carpet…… just wrong!
Perhaps we need to spend a little more time finding out ‘our’ rites as affected citizens……
How ironic that some of us are working so hard to make High Street, Wellington look attractive and inviting whilst there is somebody (from High Street, incidentally) trying to burn part of it down.
