More than 50 intrepid volunteers signed up to take part in a sponsored abseil down the tower of St John the Baptist Church in Wellington at the weekend to raise money for FLAG – Flooding on the Levels Action Group. They were cheered on by a crowd of supporters who watched throughout the morning.
Amongst those who chose to fall from a great height for a good cause were mother and son team Joe and Vicky Miles, friends Charmaine Briggs and Abby Norman and the Rev Tim Treanor, the Rector of St John’s Church. All those who made it safely to the ground were awarded a Certificate of Achievement for their courage.
The abseil was organised by XEIAD Difficult Access Engineering Consultants based in Tiverton. The company’s Operations Director, Dave Rylatt, whose team managed the abseil, said, “We decided to support the work of FLAG following the floods earlier this year by planning this event and the team are donating their time today. We’re absolutely delighted with the way people have responded. We’ve had more people volunteering today to add to those who had already signed up. Everyone is paying £20 to enter and there’s sponsorship and donations to add to that. We’re hoping to raise at least £4,000 – all of which goes to FLAG.”
