Somerset County Council Highways are pulling out the stops to resurface a stretch of the A38 Wellington Relief Road damaged by a diesel spill.
Work began on early on Wednesday to resurface a quarter of a mile of the road between Hoyles Road and Swains Lane which has been closed since lunchtime on Tuesday following the spill from a fuel tanker.
Diverted traffic has been travelling down Wellesley Park and South St, causing severe difficulties as trucks and coaches squeeze between rows of parked cars.
The aim is for the A38 to be reopened on Wednesday evening depending on the full extent of the damage. Work on another road in the County has been postponed to allow the Highways gang to tackle the A38 immediately.
Motorists can expect high levels of traffic through Wellington town centre and are advised to avoid it if possible and use the motorway if they can.
