Following an exceptionally sunny summer it is not surprising that this year’s Flower Show promised to be “absolutely fabulous” in the words of Flower Show Society Secretary, Sheena Page. “We’ve had 108 entrants in the various classes which is an increase on last year,” she added. And with classes for fruit, vegetables, craft, art, photography, cookery and floral art – and 24 separate children’s classes too – the show is about much more than just flower arrangements; there are entries in many of the 450 separate categories listed in the programme.
Whilst the dahlia and chrysanthemum specialists were not themselves delighted with a sunny summer as “sunshine makes them grow too quickly” according to exhibitors working to very strict specifications, the results were spectacular. They were being shown inside the Alan Rogers Centre at Wellington School, alongside other entries, for the first time this year.
Exhibitors putting the final touches to their entries before the show opened to the public at the weekend were about to present the 11 judges with some very difficult decisions but visitors in the afternoon could expect to see a spectacular display of skill and dedication.
