Wellington Fire Station has issued a safety plea over campfires following an incident at the weekend.
Its Facebook page reported yesterday (Sunday): “Crews attended yet another avoidable fire today.
“A campfire had been left smouldering in a hard to reach area. The area was covered in dry vegetation and had burnt down underground needing to be dug out.
“We used 120 meters of hosereel and a 25 meter length of 51mm hose to reach the area up a steep hill.
“Please please please consider if these fires are really needed and, if so, are extinguished suitably.”
