The two top teams in the Weekend League at Wellington Bowling Club ran into trouble this week while the two teams at the bottom end had a big fight on their hands.
The closest game of the three was between New Rollers and Ninchers who were propping up the table.
Ninchers’ Jeanette Mogg and Chris Mogg had not had much playing time on an indoor rink this season but, supported by seasoned skip Simon Spalding, they bowled well.
Paul Mitchell, Diana Dagg and Martin Speakman’s New Rollers started well but Ninchers soon came back at them and, after nine ends, the teams were level on eight shots apiece.
In the last ends, Rollers snatched the lead and went on to win a close game 16–8.
Southsiders have not lost a single game since the beginning of the season so they were a tough proposition for third-placed Woodpeckers.
Janet Lovell, Ed Norris and Steve Lovell’s Woodpeckers played well from the beginning and were 8–0 up after just three ends.
Phil Hutchings, Jay Merrell and Steve Horrill’s Southsiders did their best to catch them but it was too little too late and Woodpeckers won by a fair margin, 18–8.
Fourth-placed Allstars only came together a short time ago but they showed they have real potential as they took on the second-placed Skylarks.
Monica Carter, Alan Every and skip Arthur Carter’s Skylarks started well, taking an early lead, but Suzanne Worth, Ron Elston and Barry Cutler’s Allstars soon settled to their task and overtook for a 10–3 lead after six ends.
Skylarks started the chase to catch them but couldn’t make much headway and Allstars won it, 16–7.
