Boom Boys lift the Peter Bird Cup

Boom Boys have won this year’s Peter Bird skittles tournament at Wellington Football Club.

They won the cup, and £300 in prizemoney, by beating Outsiders in the final last night (Friday).

The popular six-a-side tournament, which has been running at the club since May, attracted 32 teams from across a wide area.

Tiverton-based Boom Boys won the final by 34 pins as they knocked 293 in their six hands, Stuart Palfrey top scoring with 61 after starting with two spares.

Local side Outsiders, for whom Ronnie Smith hit 51, had the consolation of collecting £150 as runners-up while the £50 prize for the highest first-match score went to Brass Monkeys with 292.

Before making the presentations, Peter Bird thanked all the players who had taken part along with his wife, Ann, for her help in organising the competition.

He also thanked the football club for hosting and supporting the tournament, members of the club’s Wildcats girls’ section for sticking up and all the voluntary bar staff.

On behalf of the football club, Ken Bird replied by paying tribute to both Peter and Ann for their hard work in making the competition another resounding success.
