Wellington Chiefs started life under new player-coach Brad Field with a pre-season victory last night (Thursday).
They defeated Bridgwater & Albion 29pts-26 before a big crowd at the Athletic Ground.
The Chiefs got off to a flying start with tries by skipper George Hodgson and his brother Will before a brilliant solo try by Tom Owen.
With Danny Goverd converting one of the scores, they led 17pts-nil after 40 minutes.
Albion hit back with two tries of their own – one of them converted – before a length of the field try was finished by Will Hodgson to make it 22pts-12.
The visitors refused to roll over and produced a dramatic late fightback as two converted tries gave them a 26pts-22 lead.
But the Chiefs had the final say with Will Hodgson completing a hat-trick of tries and Owen converting to seal victory.
It was a good game of rugby and both sides will have been happy with the runout.
The Chiefs have one other warm-up game arranged – away to Taunton Warriors next Wednesday, August 27th.
They then kick off the new season in Tribute South West Two with a trip to Okehampton on Saturday, September 6th.
