Another victory on Saturday has left Wellington CC needing ten points from their final game on secure the runners-up spot in the West of England Premier League Somerset Division, writes David Derrick.
Their penultimate game, and their last match on the road in 2026, saw a five-wicket win at Wembdon.
A changed team performed well as several players stepped up to the plate and did themselves, and the team, proud.
Wellington asked Wembdon to take first knock on winning the toss and between them Toby Stirzaker (3-16) and George Davis (1-28) delivered bullet accurate performances with the ball to see the home side struggle to 31-3.
A recovery operation between skipper Brockwell and Townsend added 80 fourth-wicket runs to get to 111 before Lakshan Edirisinghe was in the action, removing Townsend for 23 through a Davis catch.
Nathan Yarde’s leg spin took 3-24 in eight good overs as the fielding backed up the bowlers with two catches for Tyler Fyfe, one of which removed Brockwell for 59.
Runs outs executed by Edirisinghe and Arron Campbell were of great value and saw that Wellington would need 193 for a tenth win of the season.
Campbell and Toby Stirazker in the pinch-hitting role added 27 for the first wicket with Stirzaker nailing three fours in his nine-ball stay at the crease.
Another wicket was lost at 34, but Edirisinghe joined Campbell and this partnership took the Wellington score to 102 at which point Campbell was trapped LBW for a well-made 46 in 78 balls with four fours and a six.
Edirisinghe, coming to the end of his second season as Wellington’s overseas player, made a pleasant 72 in 95 balls with 11 fours and two sixes as the required total was well in sight.
Jacob Hurry’s 32 was an excellent supportive knock to Edirisinghe’s effort and it was Brendan Poole along with Yarde who saw Wellington over the line by five wickets with 5.5 overs going unused.
Chard are the visitors to the Lloyd and Whyte Ground for the final game of the season on Saturday (noon start), followed by an evening of entertainment with food available to purchase.
