Wellington RFC, who are celebrating their 150th anniversary next season, have formed a senior women’s team.
The club have registered the side in the Women’s South West NC3 league and a full set of fixtures has been confirmed.
The squad have two dedicated England Rugby Level II coaches in Dom Byrne and Hugh Barrett and aim to have other coaches providing an input throughout the season.
Hugh said: “This is something I know the club have keenly wanted to get off the ground.
“What better time than during the club’s 150th anniversary season and the year of the Women’s Rugby World Cup?
“Training commenced in mid-May and numbers are increasing weekly. There is a really good buzz going around the group and the feedback has been very positive.
“The perception of rugby may deter some people but I would advise anyone who wants to have fun, meet new friends, get fit and learn new skills to give it a try.
“We are a very warm and welcoming club, who are committed to providing the best opportunities for women to play this great game.
“So if you’re new to rugby, or an existing player, please come down to the club. We look forward to seeing anyone of any ability at one of our training sessions.”
Training is on Monday and Wednesday evenings, starting at 6.45pm until about 8pm.
