After a disappointing 2-1 loss midweek to Wells, manager Jones recalled Legg, Fleet, Bryant(S) to the starting line up for the game against Portishead who after two disappointing seasons have made a good start and beat Wells comfortably in their last game.
On a dry cold day it was Portishead who made the better start and with their right winger causing problems early on it was only good defending which stopped Portishead from taking an early lead. Keeper Woodgate continued his good form and he was well supported by centre-halves Ellis and Fleet.
Wellington finally got into the game and Redrup started to cause problems while Bellinger who has been quiet in recent games started to get on the ball. It was end to end but Wellingtons final ball wasn’t good enough while Portishead were now struggling to create anything against the well-organised Wellington defence.
The second half started with Nott having to go off after a collision of heads and Jack Bryant came on to replace him. Again Portishead started the better but Wellington weathered it and then went on to create the best chances of the game.Bryant put in a great cross which Redrup just failed to get on the end of,
Drayton had a header which came back off the crossbar and then Bellinger then had two chances, the first the keeper made a brilliant save to push it past the post while the second he saved comfortably. Back came Portishead but Wellington hung on, then were disappointed to see two strong penalty claims ignred when Redrup was bundled over twice in the box.
Sam Jones came on for a shattered Tim Legg as the game ended 0-0. Wellington were disappointed not to get a victory against a useful Portishead but it was a much improved performance and they will be looking to build on it on Saturday when they entertain Warminster.
