Transition Town Wellington welcome everyone to join them in an Apple Pressing Day at Swains Lane Nature Reserve on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.
The event is also a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the reserve which was saved from development by the presence of great crested newts in the pond in the lower field.
The newts are strictly protected by law and their habitats preserved.
Since 2006, maintenance of the reserve – which includes the orchard in the upper field – has been carried out by volunteers whose work has been recognised by Green Flag awards for open spaces managed by the local community.
TTW’s Apple Pressing Day invites everyone to either pick their own apples from the orchards or take along those they have picked elsewhere to have them juiced.
TTW will have three hand-operated presses but there will be no pasteurisation available. Juice will last three days unless frozen or made into cider. Clean bottles (but not milk bottles) should be brought to the event.
TTW will also be demonstrating the art of scything and welcoming anyone who would be interested in joining one or more of the volunteer gardening teams which maintain both Swains Lane Nature Reserve and the other community gardens around the town.
The Apple Pressing Day is for everyone and families are welcome.
