Wellington has a fishmonger again. Five years after leaving the High St, and 12 years since he started as a Saturday assistant in Cornhill, Sam Cunningham is back in business, on Fore St next door to Perry’s.
“It’s great to be back,” said Sam. “I’m going to be selling fish straight from the trawlers at Brixham and Newlyn. Unbelievably fresh.”On the slab today were all the usual favourites, plus octopus, shark and sea bream.
He spent part of his time away from the town running Rick Stein’s retail outlet in Padstow.
“I learned so much from that job and made great contacts with the skippers and merchants,” he said. For the past month Sam has been working evenings and weekends fitting out the shop, tiling walls, organising fridges and freezers.
“It’s been a mission but we got there and opening bang on time at 8.00am this morning,” Sam said proudly. “Two weeks from now we’ll start to sell game.” Hence the shop’s name – Wet & Wild.

Well done Sam I wish you success,
Don Jones
I am moving into the area shortly and so glad to hear a fishmongers has opened up. Can’t wait to see what game you have too!
