The Weavers’ Arms pub in Rockwell Green was reduced to rubble this week to make way for a £3.6 million building scheme. 26 new council homes will be built on the site of the pub, the public toilet block next to it and 10 properties in the vicinity which were demolished last year.
The new development will provide a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom, energy efficient houses and bungalows with car parking. Some will be adapted for wheelchair users.
Cllr Terry Beale, executive councillor for Housing Services, said: “The council is committed to providing high quality social housing and this scheme is part of the ongoing programme of investment and regeneration.”
Commenting on road closures in Popes Lane which were imposed on Monday 16 January and will run through to 3 February, Cllr Beale said, “While it is regrettable that the road closure may cause some inconvenience, it is necessary to ensure the work on removing power cables is carried out safely and without interruption.”
