Crosses planted in remembrance of those from the local area whose lives have been lost in conflicts were dedicated in a service at Wellington Baptist Church on Sunday 3 November.
The service was attended by the Mayor, Councillor Janet Lloyd, her fellow councillors, members of the Wellington branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) and members of the public. More crosses were planted during the service. Rev Sam Griffiths, Pastor of the Baptist Church, led prayers and a two minute silence.
The ashes of crosses planted at the Field of Remembrance in South Street will be sprinkled on the Garden of Remembrance next to the War Memorial in Wellington Park during the Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 10 November at 3.15pm. A two minute silence will be held in the town centre on Monday 11 November at 11am.
Members of Wellington Women’s Institute have filled the town with hand-crocheted poppies – mainly red but with a scattering of white and purple. The most spectacular decoration is the ‘waterfall’ of poppies in the Remembrance Garden in North Street made from more that 3000 red poppies. More of the WI’s poppies can be found on railings in the town centre, at the entrance to Lancer Court and in planters along Fore Street and the High Street, all of them a powerful visual reminder of the ultimate sacrifice of members of the armed forces in zones of conflict.
Poppies can be bought from the Pop Up Shop in Fore Street which has been taken over by the Wellington branch of the RBL for the week leading to Remembrance Day. Poppies are also available at many of the shops in the town.
