Catch the Bus campaign gathers support

More than 40 people signed up to support the Catch the Bus campaign in Wellington.

Members of the local Wellington Bus User Group, which is part of the Somerset Bus Partnership, handed out leaflets explaining the purpose of the action to encourage people to help in promoting bus travel and campaign for better services. People could also give their views on what they want from their bus service.

Local councillors had been expected to join the group and had expressed support but they had been called to an emergency meeting to discuss the cost of living crisis.

The group said: “Buses reduce congestion, improve air quality and provide access to life’s opportunities. One of the most sustainable forms of transport, a double decker bus can take up to 75 cars off the road and switching just one journey in twenty five to the bus would save two million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

“Buses also reduce social isolation and improve health and wellbeing.”

The local initiative is part of a national Week of Action running from Saturday, September 3rd, to Saturday, September 10th.

Claire Walters, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK – the charity behind Catch a Bus Month – said “Buses make a huge contribution to our lives socially, economically and environmentally. They are also a lifeline for communities providing access to education, work, healthcare. shops and leisure. We want to see more people get on board this September to protect these vital services for future generations.”
