Is your pet going on holiday abroad this year? Already 100,000 UK pets leave the country temporarily each year under the PETS Travel Scheme and the number is growing steadily. However, there are risks beyond the well-known rabies, warns The Mount veterinary practice
“In Europe there are certain endemic diseases that have not been present in the UK until very recently. Certain diseases such as Leishmaniosis, Babesia and Ehrlichia are starting to spread into this country from the movement of pets across Europe,” explained Wellington vet Charlotte Freeman.
“Some of them such as Leishmaniosis can even spread to people. Therefore it is vital that we do not unknowingly bring these diseases back into the UK with our dogs and cats.
“Many of these diseases are transmitted through insects or ticks and so effective parasite control whilst you and your pet are abroad is essential to try to limit the exposure and spread of some of these potentially fatal dieases. A new vaccine has been developed against Leishmaniosis in dogs to protect them whilst abroad.”

It is on Thursday 18th July at 7.30pm at the Wellington Rugby Club. As well as two guest speakers there will be light refreshments and a free raffle with the chance to win a travel hamper worth over £50.
