Luson Surgery in Fore Street has issued an appeal to its 6,600 patients ahead of its closure next month.
The surgery announced the decision last month, promising patients “a smooth automatic transfer” to Wellington Medical Centre in Mantle Street.
Luson issued a post on its Facebook page this week, saying: “With the practice closure looking on the 26th September 2025, we have been receiving high call volumes, leading for long delays in calls being answered.
“We appreciate you may want to try and see a clinician before you transfer over to Wellington Medical Centre.
“We will always try to see you before the 26th September 2025 but we also need to deal with urgent on-the-day care as priority.
“We want to help as much as we can before we close. We just ask you to be patient with us please.”
News of the “difficult decision” came in a statement from the two-partner practice which said it had faced increasing challenges over the past 18 months due to staffing recruitment and retention issues, as well as premises challenges.
The statement added: “When the practice closes its doors on 26th September, all patients will be automatically transferred to Wellington Medical Centre, in Mantle Street (a few minutes away from Luson Surgery), giving it a patient list size of around 23,000.
“The transfer has been arranged by NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board, which is responsible for commissioning primary care services.”
Wellington Town Council agreed at its August meeting to seek an urgent meeting with representatives of Somerset NHS Trust and Wellington Medical Centre
Local MP, Gideon Amos, who attended the meeting, said he had written to the Secretary of State to raise the need for more GPs in Wellington.
Concerns have also been expressed over the town’s pharmacy provision following the decision of Somerset ICB not to approve the reopening of the pharmacy at Wellington Medical Centre.
