Wellington Flower Show – always one of the town’s most popular events and this year celebrating its 90th anniversary – attracted hundreds of people to Wellington School’s Alan Rogers Centre today (Saturday).
While spectacular flowers, many in stunning arrangements, and an extensive display of perfectly formed fruit and vegetables are major features of the annual event, classes covering art and crafts, photography and cookery – with a number for children – made for extensive and impressive displays.
One striking exhibit was created by residents at Linden House Nursing Home. With support from their Activities team, a group of residents crafted a sculpture from cardboard and papier mache covered in flowers made from a varied range of materials over several weeks. Some of the residents were at the show with their carers.
Taunton and Wellington’s MP Gideon Amos (pictured above) and his wife, Caroline Ellis, were also present in support of the organisers, including the show’s Secretary, Sheena Page.
Despite a long period of weather, which could be seen as unhelpful for growers but good for the beach, the show’s Chairman, Stephen Page, said that prolonged drought and abundant sunshine had been manageable.
All the classes were judged prior to the show’s official opening to the public with cups and awards presented at the close.
