Boules proof! Petanque scores

The new petanque pitch next to Wellington Sports Centre is now in regular use – and anyone can join in.

A gathering of boules fans meets on Tuesdays from 1.30 to 3pm to play the gentle – but very sociable – game. There is no requirement to keep the score in French or wear a beret and there’s an open invitation to those who might have watched the game played in France and fancy having a go.

The pitch was opened by Wellington and Taunton Mayors, Bob Bowrah and Vivienne Stock-Williams, in November following requests from the University of the Third Age (U3A). TDBC supported the development – built entirely from developer contributions – as an extension of existing sports and recreational facilities in the town.

The Sports Centre keeps two sets of boules at Reception so any group can take advantage of the pitch for a game. It’s free, fun and French – and if it’s popular in winter, think how pleasant it will as a gentle sport be in spring and summer.
