Kingsmead Year 7 students have spent a day learning about what life was like during the English Civil War in the 17th Century. Members of the Torrington 1646 group came in as characters from that time and spoke in detail about a number of aspects. Students found the details of the torture of witches and the barber/surgeon techniques particularly gory and were amazed to find out that some of the common sayings we have today originate from those times such as ‘straight laced’ which was when the Puritans changed the way they laced their bodices.
