Counties Western North: Wellington Chiefs 20pts, Old Redcliffians 2nds 40
Despite going down to defeat, there were plenty of encouraging signs for Wellington Chiefs as they opened their campaign at the Athletic Ground yesterday (Saturday).
The Chiefs were relegated without winning a game last season but their opening display showed a considerable improvement.
Alex Davey kicked two penalties for Wellington during the opening half but Old Reds showed their quality by crossing for three converted tries after ten, 18 and 35 minutes.
That left the visitors leading 21pts-6 and they scored again after the break with an interception try to stretch the advantage to 26pts-6.
Despite the scoreline, the Chiefs were playing some good rugby without enjoying much luck and they received their reward when Ashton Cottrell crossed for a well-deserved try (pictured above).
Davey added the conversion to reduce the deficit to 26pts-13 and give the hosts renewed hope.
But Old Reds were a well-drilled outfit and responded with another converted try to make it 33pts-13.
Wellington continued to battle and demonstrated the considerable strides they have made since last season.
Their efforts were rewarded again when new skipper Ollie Price went over for their second try, with Davey once more adding the extras to make it 33pts-20.
The home side continued to take the game to their opponents but Old Reds had the final say, scoring a converted try against the run of play to complete their victory.
The Chiefs are on the travels next Saturday as they take on Clifton 2nds.

Good performance by Wellington. Held up twice over the line, which could have got them some points
