Vernon stars in Tangerines’ defeat

Jewson Western League premier division: Newquay 6, Wellington 0

It was another frustrating afternoon for Wellington AFC as they returned home empty handed from Cornwall yesterday (Saturday).

Player of the match Luke Vernon is congratulated by coach John Norman.

They showed a considerable improvement on the previous week’s 9-1 thumping by leaders Bridgwater United but were still left without a point after ten games.

The Tangerines had keeper Luke Vernon (pictured above) to thank for keeping the scores level during the opening stages as their player of the match produced a series of fine saves.

Vernon got down well to deny the hosts after only four minutes before making another sharp stop nine minutes later and then saving well from a free kick.

Newquay threatened again midway through the half when they broke clear, only for the resulting lob to drift wide.

But Wellington were also posing a threat and produced a flowing move after 25 minutes which ended with young winger Isaac Baker unleashing a stinging shot which was parried by the home keeper.

Three minutes later, however, Newquay made the breakthrough as Louis Price broke clear before shooting home to put his side ahead.

Wellington looked set to go into the interval only one goal behind but the hosts struck again in stoppage time, Tim Nixon cutting inside before firing home to make it 2-0.

The Tangerines made a bright start to the second half and Lewis Oaten went close six minutes after the restart when his looping header dropped just over the bar.

Newquay then struck the woodwork with a lob before Vernon produced another excellent save, this time using his legs to keep out the home side.

But the Wellington keeper was finally beaten for a third time after 63 minutes when Newquay were awarded a penalty and Jack Bray-Evans fired the spot-kick into the top corner.

The hosts added a fourth ten minutes later as a cross from the left was volleyed home by Price for his second goal of the afternoon.

Wellington’s difficult afternoon continued two minutes later when a cross from the right was turned into their own net and Newquay completed the scoring two minutes from time, Ben Shaw firing into the roof of the net from eight yards.

Despite the final scoreline, Wellington could take some encouragement from their performance as they turn their attention to next Saturday’s home clash with St Blazey.
