Transition Town Wellington’s extensive programme of environmental activities across the community – all supported by volunteers – is protecting and improving the ecological health of six sites around the town.
They are at Fox’s Field (pictured), Longacre, Swains Lane Nature Reserve, Post Close, Burrough Way and Linden Meadow.
TTW’s regular programme of work, detailed on the group’s website and in their monthly newsletter, includes an open invitation to everyone to join them for whatever time they can give, with tools and guidance provided.
TTW’s range of activities includes those concerned with protecting local water courses.
The Water Guardians’ monthly meeting for October is tomorrow (Thursday) at Braziers Coffee Shop, Tonedale Mill at 9.30am.
TTW said: “We’d love more people to get involved so if you’re interested, please come along to a meeting, which are held on the first Thursday of every other month.
“For more information or if you’d like to get involved but can’t make this time, contact Sue on tel 07896 031236 or email suerickard234@gmail.com
Now, TTW are about to launch a new Hedge Group with a trial first meeting on Tuesday, October 13th.
TTW said: “Do you love hedges, perhaps for their wildlife value, the wildflowers along them in the spring, or the historic framework they give to our countryside?
“Perhaps you are a practical person, love working outside with your hands and looking for a career in the countryside, and want to gain some experience.
“You might ask, what can we do towards seeing more healthy hedges in our countryside when we don’t own the land? We have some initial ideas.
“Whether we have the capacity to launch another sub group in TTW depends on whether we have new people join. It will depend on you, or perhaps someone you know who you could encourage to come along.
“There will be roles for strong, fit people, but also admin roles and lighter tasks such as surveying. So please come to the meeting, and if you can’t make it this time, please contact us via community.ttw@gmail.com, Facebook messenger or 07543 825636 and tell us you are interested.
TTW are also supporting International Walk to School Month which begins tomorrow (Thursday).
This is a month-long celebration where children across the globe celebrate walking to school.
International Walk to School Month aims to “promote sustainable travel habits, the joy of exercise and road safety.
“Even if your child can’t walk the full way to school, parents are encouraged to park a short distance away from the school and walk the last little bit to ease congestion and improve air quality around the vicinity of your school.”
