Members of Genesis Youth Theatre – Wellington Arts Association’s lively training ground for young performers – are already well into rehearsal for their next production, The Addams Family: Young@Part® which opens at the Arts Centre on Wednesday, July 13th.
The company of more than 20 young people between the ages of 11 and 16 are in the capable hands of Director Rob Spurway who attracted deserved plaudits for his direction of Our House with Wellington Operatic Society at The Wellesley in April.
Genesis are presenting a 60-minute edition of the famous Broadway musical special devised for schools and youth theatres. Young@Part® musicals are tailor-made for younger performers, song keys are changed where needed, songs and scenes are edited for time and content, while keeping the spirit of the original Broadway show intact.
This version features Wednesday Addams, the ultimate Princess of Darkness, who has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family her parents have never met. She confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother.
Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
Wellington Arts Association has already proved itself this year in offering the town fine, accessible, quality entertainment from its various groups and has emerged strongly from the pandemic; next month the young performers of Genesis look to continue the trend.
