The Labour Party is putting up three candidates for the new West Somerset and Taunton district council to compete for the four wards in Wellington, two in Wellington North and one in Rockwell Green. The candidates are:
Andrew Govier (Wellington North)
Andrew has been a hardworking local councillor for over 26 years. He has served the community on the Town, District and County councils, including being Mayor of Taunton Deane and Wellington. Over the years he has helped hundreds of local residents with many issues, including housing, education and highways issues. Andrew works with councillors from all parties to deliver positive outcomes for the town. In recent years, he has helped to save the youth centre from closure; improved the traffic flow at the Longforth/High Street junction; campaigned for improved sports facilities and fought against cuts imposed by central and local government. He is a Christian and member of St John’s Parish Church.
His priorities are:
- to see the community hospital reopened;
- more social and affordable housing for local families;
- the new school at Longforth Farm to be built;
- improved employment opportunities;
- redevelopment of the mill buildings at Tone;
- improvements to the environment.
Mike McGuffie (Wellington North)
I have lived in the Wellington area for 18 years, first in Langford Budville and since 2010 in North Wellington. My career was in IT and auditing but for the last five years I have been a full time homemaker for my family. I have been a governor at my childrens’ primary school and am active in the local Friends of the Earth, Oxfam fundraising and Peace groups. Wellington is a lovely town and I am interested in how we can make it more sustainable, improving the environment and reducing pollution while ensuring the homes and facilities people need are available.
My priorities would include improving transport with a better traffic, cycling and pedestrian environment; a cycleway to Taunton and reopening of Wellington Station, the redevelopment of the Tonedale Mill site; and ensuring that town facilities expand to keep up with the increase in population from new housing.
